Boston Dynamics just released a new video of the Big Dog on ice and snow, and also demoing its walking gait.

The Most Advanced Quadruped Robot on Earth BigDog is the alpha male of the Boston Dynamics family of robots. It is a quadruped robot that walks, runs, and climbs on rough terrain and carries heavy loads. BigDog is powered by a gasoline engine that drives a hydraulic actuation system. BigDog's legs are articulated like an animal's, and have compliant elements that absorb shock and recycle energy from one step to the next. BigDog is the size of a large dog or small mule, measuring 1 meter long, 0.7 meters tall and 75 kg weight.

BigDog has an on-board computer that controls locomotion, servos the legs and handles a wide variety of sensors. BigDog's control system manages the dynamics of its behavior to keep it balanced, steer, navigate, and regulate energetics as conditions vary. Sensors for locomotion include joint position, joint force, ground contact, ground load, a laser gyroscope, and a stereo vision system. Other sensors focus on the internal state of BigDog, monitoring the hydraulic pressure, oil temperature, engine temperature, rpm, battery charge and others. So far, BigDog has trotted at 3.3 mph, climbed a 35 degree slope and carried a 120 lb load. BigDog is being developed by Boston Dynamics with help from Foster Miller, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the Harvard University Concord Field Station.Development is funded by the DARPA Defense Sciences Office.

The Rugged Robot that Devours Rough Terrain RHex is a man-portable robot with extraordinary rough terrain mobility. RHex climbs over rock fields, mud, sand, vegetation, railroad tracks, telephone poles and up steep slopes and stairways. RHex has a sealed body, making it fully operational in wet weather, in muddy and swampy conditions, and it can swim on the surface or dive underwater. RHex's remarkable terrain capabilities have been validated in independent testing at US Government Labs. RHex is controlled remotely from an operator control unit at distances up to 600 meters. A video uplink provides front and rear views from RHex's onboard cameras. RHex also uplinks navigational data from onboard compass and GPS and from payload sensors. A downlink allows the operator to control mobility and to operate mission payloads. http://www.bdi.com/content/sec.php?section=RHex

Here is the latest BigDog Military Robot video. From the video you can see that the new advanced BigDog now features 2 legs instead of 4. It also features a new engine that cuts the buzzing noise in half. In addition, the new unit has increased payload with it's efficient plastic bag technology. The engineers even ordered special lettering for the side of autonomous robot that says, "BIG DOG", in bold print. Leaked video from area 51. HAHA.. Made by youtube users: mrackilush(the mad scientist in the green suit that tested the stability of the two-legged robot; HBD) ulvne(U.L.V.N.E. is the robots AI, short for Ultimate Lethal Variousity Neutralising Equality) 5446numba(the nerd who sneaked into Area-51 and recorded the whole testing scenario) We think that the scientists at Area-51 have done a great job so far, we are looking forward of seeing new versions of this high-tech robot.

Persistent ankle biting and sheer determination pays off big time for "Krissy" the Keeshond. Using her famous "under the belly" maneuver she quickly gains the upper paw against the much larger but lethargic Big Dog. Enjoy artist Stephen Kline's magic Keeshond lithograph along with the other 115 breeds at: drawdogs.com All art is drawn using the breed's name written over and over — 6,000 collectors world wide.
